Local Harvest - input your zip code and "find farmers' markets, family farms, and other sources of sustainably grown food in your area"

Local food is generally fresher because it has traveled less, been picked more recently, experienced less warehousing time.  Because the food has traveled fewer "food miles" it means less fossil fuels were burned, and thus less greenhouse gasses emitted.

Smaller farms frequenty use more diverse varieties (biodiversity) and many use less chemicals (decreased toxins, cleaner air and water table, healthier soil, possibly organic).  Statistics prove that smaller farms generally grow more species of plants (biodiversity, ecosystems) and this in turn supports more wildlife.

Choosing local food supports local small farmers and family businesses.  You get to know your vendors when you attend a farmer's market regularly.  You form a relationship, with the people who provide the food you and your family eat.

  • More info about local food is in the resources listing for the Environmental Change-Makers' "100 Mile potluck" event.

Relocalization is not an If but a When.
